ANALYSIS: How DSS switched from security to robbery under Buhari

An embarrassing scenario has emerged recently detailing how President Muhammadu Buhari’s kinsman at the helm of affairs at the Department of State Security Service, DSS, Lawal Daura, has morphed from dictatorship to armed robbery within six months in power.
The ungodly desperation has led to the arrest of two officials of the DSS following an armed robbery claim involving five members of the organization.
The five operatives were publicly declared armed robbers by the DSS which said they were found to have been involved in an armed robbery operation where they robbed a Bureau De Change operator of N310m.
DSS released identities of the “agents turned robbers” as; Abdulrasheed Maigari, Solomon Inusa, Peter Okoye, Patrick Ishaya and George Mwatapwa Ibbi.
Since then, the public has remained puzzled as to why those empowered to enforce laws are now the breakers of the law.
Since Buhari appointed Daura to head the DSS on July 2, 2015 many have questioned Daura’s integrity, owing to his personal relationship with the President, which is perceived as a bane to the independence of a vital intelligence agency like the DSS.
The opposition Peoples Democratic Party, PDP, pointed out he is a card caring member of the ruling All Progressives Congress, APC, a claim the ruling party has failed to disprove thus far.
Many have cried foul over Daura’s meddling with the ongoing electoral tribunals in Rivers and Akwa Ibom states.
In similar voice, a civil rights organization, International Society for Civil Liberties and the rule of law, INTERSOCIETY, tagged Daura’s appointment as unconstitutional and called for its immediate reversal
Since May 29, 2015, the Daura led DSS has earned a public reputation as the secret police machine of the ruling APC government used to harass and intimidate the opposition and perceived enemies of Buhari’s government.
The Chief Security Officer to former President, Goodluck Jonathan, Gordon Obua was arrested and detained by the DSS while being denied access to his lawyers and doctors.
News of a frail and weak Obua’s possible death in the hands of the DSS forced them to publicly produce him alive and immediately release him from their custody without charges.
Also, the DSS had invaded the Akwa Ibom Government House on a ransacking mission.
This came after the Akwa Ibom PDP Chairman Obong Paul Ekpo raised an alarm over the spate of harassment of its members and the manner in which the DSS was aiding and abetting the APC at the venue of the electoral tribunal that sat in Abuja.
There was news that the Akwa Ibom Resident Electoral Commissioner was arrested, detained and tortured on trumped up charges.
The latest of it series of undemocratic action was on Wednesday, December 2, 2015 the DSS operatives stormed the Ikoyi, Lagos home of one of its Former Director Generals, Kayode Are. They ejected him and his family, and threw away their properties despite a court order barring the DSS from taking the action.
An injunction from the Federal High Court, Lagos, was served on them (SSS),” the former DG said. “But as you can see, they are disobeying the court order,” he said, almost in tears.
