ANAMBRA TWIN SOCCER FIESTA: Governor's Cup and Traders Cup Kicks Off

Today, in a historic event that took place at the Ministry of Youth Entrepreneurship and Sports Development, draws of two competitions were made to take place concurrently in the State.
The competition which comes behind the Anambra State U-17 Academicals that features both boys and girls of every secondary school in Anambra state is set to kick off technically tomorrow having been declared open by today’s draw.
In attendance of today’s draw were the Commissioner for Youth Entrepreneurship and Sports Development, Ogbuefi Tony Nnacheta, Permanent Secretary of the Ministry, Dr. Emma Udeh Akpeh, Emma Okala, Senior Special Assistant to The Governor on Sports and local government Sports Officers.
Permanent Secretary Dr. Emma Udeh Akpeh while speaking hailed the efforts of His Excellency Dr. Willie Obiano who has approved of this competition after the academicals which is now at its final stage. He said this competition has a sole aim of keeping up with his Excellency’s charge to re-ignite the spirit of togetherness amongst Ndi Anambra.

Ogbuefi Tony Nnacheta, the commissioner who termed this event a historic one, expressed happiness to be the one declaring the competition open.
He said that this is the first time in history; three different competitions are being held simultaneously by a government of this state and believe this will re-ignite the spirit of togetherness again.

Speaking further, he stressed on the performance of Anambra state in the area of sports, how appalling it has been. He then said gone are the days when Anambra used to come 30th out of 37 contestants in National Sports festival.
He said the man at the helm of the affairs in the person of Governor Willie obiano does not take anything average and that’s why everything is being done to revive the spirit of sports in Anambra State.
Meanwhile, he stated the tournament is holding this period to make the next fortnight in Anambra worthwhile and festive as well and there would be no room for any problem. He then admonished any Local government or traders association not ready to compete to wait for next year.
For the Traders Cup, we have 17 teams representing 17 market unions who registered to play and they include, Ariaria market Aba, Ogbo ogonogo market Asaba, Ogbete market Enugu, Gombe market, Oba market Benin, Abagana market Abagana,Onitsha main market, Dutse market Dutse, Makurdi market Makurdi, Eke Awka market Awka, Lokoja market, Old motor parts market Obosi, Urua market Calabar, Sabon gari market Kano, Nkwo market Igboukwu, and Nkwo Ogbe market Ihiala.
For the Governor’s cup, the draw also took place and the 21 local government were listed as below,
Meanwhile, the draws for the local government would cover both the men and women category.
1. Anambra West which will not contest in the first stage
2. Nnewi North
4. Orumba North
5. Onitsha South
6. Onitsha North
8. Idemili North
10. Awka North
13. Awka South
14. Orumba South
16. Anambra East
19. Nnwei South
21. Idemili South
Both tournaments would commence tomorrow at Rojenny games village Oba and there would also be matches holding at Chuba Ikpeazu and Achebe stadia in Onitsha.
Responding to a trader’s question of how much is involved in the competition; Ogbuefi Nnacheta said the winners of the three categories of the competition taking off tomorrow would go home with the sum of one million naira while the runner-ups would go home with N500, 000 each. The participants responded as well with applause amidst cheering.

He then listed some additional prizes for people that would be outstanding such as best goalkeeper who will smile home with N200, 000, Most valuable player who will smile home with N200,000 and then highest goal scorer who will smile home with N100, 000. This again, was greeted with joyous cheers from the crowd.
The various sports officers from the 21 local government areas were then given the rules guiding the competition before their departure in order for them not to cause altercation during the competition.
