Edo speaker to step aside as Oshiomhole plays politics

Governor Oshiomhole plans to return the Speaker of the assembly back to Edo Central Senatorial district to make peace among APC leaders

The move will see Rt. Hon. Elizabeth Ativie, step aside as speaker of the Edo state House of Assembly

She will be compensated with Deputy Speaker role, with other parting allowances

Rt. Hon. Elizabeth Ativie, will step aside as speaker of the Edo state House of Assembly on Monday, July 25, in a political move aimed at boosting the All Progressives Congress (APC)’s chances of victory in the September 10 governorship poll.

According to a report on This Day, the APC in Edo state have decided to play their cards well ahead of the upcoming poll and at such, moved to balance the tripod arrangement in the state.
"Rt. Hon. Elizabeth Ativie, will step aside as speaker of the Edo state House of Assembly on Monday, July 25, in a move set to favour APC."

It was gathered that Ativie’s resignation as speaker will put an end to the rumoured marginalization of Edo Central Senatorial district, as the region is now set to produce the next speaker of the House.

Following the emergence of Godwin Obaseki as candidate from Edo South Senatorial district and Philip Shaibu as his running mate from Edo North, the APC leaders in the state thought it was only wise to compensate the Edo Central Senatorial district, so as to prevent infighting amongst its members going into the election.

We recalls that the former Speaker, Victor Edoror from Esan extraction (Esan Central state constituency), was impeached on May 3 for alleged financial impropriety and high handedness and was replaced by Ativie from Edo south.

Sixteen members signed the impeachment notice circulated to journalists immediately after the House proceedings while seven declined.

Against this backdrop, the people of Edo central raised the alarm of foul play as it accused Governor Adams Oshiomhole of marginalizing the area.

But sensing the danger ahead, APC leaders met with Governor Oshiomhole and resolved to return the Speaker of the assembly back to Edo Central Senatorial district.

It is in this vein, a current member of the House disclosed on the condition of anonymity that Speaker Ativie will step down as Speaker on Monday and that will come as a motion.

The source further disclosed that as compensation, Ativie will be offered the Deputy Speaker role, with other parting allowances.
