Osinbajo meets with top Nigerian lawyers

The crisis rocking the Nigerian judiciary remains real especially with the string operation carried out by the DSS against judges recently

Since the arrest of some of the judges, there have been threats against the executive arm of government and this may have been part of the discussion

As the scandal rocking the Nigerian judiciary continued to cause embarrassment to the country, Vice President Yemi Osinbajo met with the new executives members of the Nigerian Bar Association (NBA) at the Presidential Villa, Abuja, we gathered.

Abubakar Mahmoud is the new president of the NBA as he won with 3,055 votes against Joe-Kyari Gadzama, who got 2,384 votes.

Some judges were raided and arrested recently in a sting operation carried out by the Department of State Services (DSS) and the NBA thinks it is a mere case of persecution.

Some of the judges also alleged victimisation for carrying out their official duties. An angry NBA said it would go against the government if the issue was not immediately resolved.

The organisation also set up a committee to resolve the issue with the executive arm. The Nation reports that no official statement has been issued concerning why the meeting was held as well as the issues discussed.

But the NBA claimed it was merely a courtesy call on the vice president.

The report quoted a source as saying: “It was a courtesy call. The new NBA officers wanted to meet with him after their elections.”
